I haven't tried Z39.50 - but it's pretty good at recognizing any cite on the web. I haven't been using Word - although I have used Word with Endnote and that integration is pretty impressive. I'm just getting started checking out Zotero and Bookends but I'll write a follow-up once I get started with one or the other.
