I know the theme here is "trying to get away from MS Word," but the beta version of Word 2007 has a built in reference manager, like EndNote. It formats for the popular citation styles (MLA, APA, Chicago...) and managed things inside Word. Pretty slick if you can afford to a) have the beta expire someday and b) put up the money for the new version when it becomes available next year.

I use EndNote too. I've looked for replacements off and on because I'm not totally satisfied with it, but it hasn't been difficult to use it with other writing programs. (Specifically I use MacJournal for all sorts of "notes" and Pages for formatted documents.) I just write in the in-text citations as I go along and at the end I go through my EndNote and highlight those cites, press apple-K and the formatted cite is copied to the clipboard and then just paste it into the references section.

How do you handle citations? I am stuck with Word because it is the only application that integrates fully with Endnote which is as far as I can tell the most powerful way to store, organize and insert citations into texts...
